Yes, the startup sound is entirely firmware mediated, so if it works
it proves the speakers, CPU, and codec (if any) are working.

The problem you describe sounds like software in origin.

Can you please advise:

1.  what model of XO laptop?

2.  what operating system version?

    cat /boot/olpc_build

3.  what kernel version?

    uname -r
