[IAEP] Thanks! Update Working... Notes on What We Did To Make It Happen

Hi All...
Thanks to all of you that gave me suggestions for updating the 10 XO-1's that sat all summer in a clerk's office at Arrowhead School in rural Montana. So far, I have successfully updated 6 of the 10 and will probably do the other 4 tomorrow (all this while working on trying to get our kitchen install done before the end of the month... tiling is tedious!).
Here are some notes you may be interested in...
I knew the clock was off since they hadn't been charged properly for about 7 months. James Cameron (Quozl) was a huge help getting that straightened out over irc last night (morning for him). In Terminal, he showed me how to check for what date was actually stored on the machine's hardware chip and how to direct it to save the correct date. That took care of the date problem. Thank you James!
The other problem was that it refused to update to 12.1.0, even after the clock was correctly set. I have included a photo of the screen message I got on all of them when I tried to go directly to 12.1.0 (see "UDfail"). I recalled that Kevin Gordon suggested I might need to go through an earlier build, such as 883 first (we were updating from 874). I did that, then did the 12.1.0 and all worked as expected.
One of the machines has a strange black circle (of dead pixels, I assume). I don't think it will be a problem. There may occasionally be an item on the tool bar that won't be visible, but the XO should continue to be usable for most things. You can see the problem in the other attachments (BB is Black Ball). I am guessing that this happened when someone left an image open for a really long time. Any ideas? It would be nice if we all knew how to avoid this. Could closing the computer with an object on the screen and leaving it a long time cause this?
Anyway thanks to all of you, especially James and Kevin. I hope sharing their/our solutions will be useful to some of you someday.
Caryl (GrannieB)
