[IAEP] Really Dumb Question

Hi All,
Heading for the summit in Montevideo and since the last language I programmed in was Pascal, thought I should get up to speed on what they are using now... at least a little bit.  So, I downloaded a free copy of "Python For Dummies" and started reading. Surprise!  Reading the history of Python, it seems it isn't Linux! (I told you this was really dumb).  
I tried to find a relationship on wikipedia... no luck.  So my question is ... exactly what language should I check out? What is being used to develop Sugar?  Help! Time is short.
