Gary,

It's kind of interesting but I see a lot of words in there like
"should, good, putting" etc.  Plus the complete text includes a lot of
code samples, so that's going to make an SOM less meaningful too.
It's hard for me to get much of an idea of what the book is about from
the diagram.

The most interesting thing like this that I've seen is the tag cloud
for the Children's Library at the Internet Archive:

 Not sure if it's of use for you, but I did an initial pass generating
a self organising map (SOM) from your current manual text. Parameters
are a little different from the usual IAEP mail-list SOMs, this one
shows 600 terms (each placed based on 600 features) for a more
detailed/deeper view than  usual:
