Can we at least have a single-stage backup for this (except for
~olpc/.cache of course) so that users can copy back the "good" parts of
their configuration?

I.e. something like:

rm -rf ~olpc/.pre-emergency-key
mkdir ~olpc/.pre-emergency-key
chown olpc.olpc ~olpc/.pre-emergency-key
mv ~olpc/.gconf ~olpc/.gnome2 ~olpc/.config ~olpc/.local ~olpc/.pre-emergency-key/
rm -rf ~olpc/.cache
