Dear all,

As you may know, next week will be a busy one with regard to Internet governance events in Europe. The WSIS +10 review will take place in Geneva from Monday 9th to Friday 13th, and Berlin will host the annual EuroDIG on Thursday 12th and Friday 13th(preceded by the German IGF on Wednesday the 11th).

There will be two sessions of particular interest to you: the first one, from 10h45 to 12h00 on Thursday at WSIS+10, will address the challenges (legal, economic and social) posed by user-generated content to online platforms and content distributors; the second, taking place the same day from 14h30 to 16h at EuroDIG, will discuss the concept of “neutrality across the ICT value chain”, addressing among other things the controversial topic of “platform neutrality”. Both sessions are organized and moderated by a DC PR member, and will hopefully contribute to initiate a discussion that will be continued at the IGF meeting in Istanbul. If you are attending one of the two aforementioned events, please do not miss these sessions! Alternatively, you can tune in and participate remotely.
I include below more detailed information and a link for registration and remote participation.

Best,
Nicolo

Details of the session on UGC:
10h45 - 12h00, Thursday 12 June 2014
Media and the Internet: New creation and distribution channels reshaping the market (WIPO)
Room E, ITU Varembé
Thematic Workshop

The session aims at identifying new trends in the production, distribution and sharing of creative content in the digital environment. The online market is providing access to an unprecedented quantity of information and content, a significant part of which is now generated by individuals, as opposed to the industry players. User-generated content (UGC) is experiencing a steady growth in terms of social and economic importance. The session will look at the main economic, legal and social challenges linked to emerging platforms and distribution models flourishing on the web. In particular panellists will contribute to the ongoing debate around the intertwined relations between industry-generated content and UGC. Understanding their roles in sectors such as education or social networks will be crucial to approach challenges linked to IP regulation. This approach is in line with WIPO’s efforts to promote a balanced international IP system as a means of rewarding creativity, stimulating innovation, and contributing to socio- economic development and access to knowledge in the public interest.

Mr. Paolo Lanteri, World Intellectual Property Organization, Italy
