 'top' only waits 0.5s. by default. What about gathering the initial
 statistics for that period then updating every 5s from now on?

 Well, the icon should also only be updated when it is visible.

 In any case, if people such as Bernie and Daniel Drake are ok with this, I
 don't have any problem in accepting it.
