Comment:

 Right now, the policy I'm following is to stick as close to the GNOME way
 of doing things and keep things as simple as possible.

 If in the future we have resources to maintain diverging strategies, we'll
 implement a simple abstract class with concrete implementations so that
 the only decision point is which implementation to use. That should be
 better than sprinkling ifs and try..excepts along the code.

 In the meantime, distros with special needs will have to patch the sugar
 code.
