[Sugar-devel] GSoC weekly meeting

Hi Utkarsh, Tony,
I am very glad the coding period of GSoC is about to start! I am
thrilled with expectation of improving Sugar.

As you might've guessed I missed the GSoC meeting because I had the
wrong time (I seem never to be able to keep up with EDT/EST times - we
should always post times in UTC). Aparently official meetings will start
this Friday in any case. You can always find me or a proxy bot with my
name that will notify me of messages at #sugar. Stay in the channel long
enough and I might be able to respond.

I read the backlog [1] and was very glad that you both made it to the
meeting and started coordinating with Sam because he is likely to be the
person to review and approve the patches Utkarsh sends, and also with
Walter who ultimately has the final decision on UI-touching features.

I am concerned the "home view" patch will reverse one design decision of
Sugar (resume journal items by default). I don't think it stands a
chance to pass because of this, so I would suggest to focus on something
else. Tony, since all of Utkarsh's proposals stem from your ideas on the
GSoC page, would you be so kind as to start a design discussion about
them or support Utkarsh in these discussions? For instance the backup
feature will require some discussion (does the user get to configure
it?). I suggest keeping it "as light as possible" on server
configuration, for instance, using or at least supporting ssh rsa keys
(or even user/pass) and rsync. It is not realistic to expect every
school to have a competent school server administrator or even a proper
server, but any linux box would serve for backups if merely using ssh+rsync.

Utkarsh, will you start a blog for short weekly posts about your
advances? Thanks

Also, let's copy sugar-devel in all our communication, we want to have
the community in the loop.

Regards,
Sebastian
