OTOH, if I tour around the world with my bootable usb stick, I'd want
the whole thing to remember stuff keyed on hw :-)

udev does remember things -- but that's problematic too. Right now I'm
on a bootable usb drive, and a borrowed laptop. Thanks to udev's
memory, ifconfig talks about eth2 and wlan3 :-)
