Thanks for the input.

In the future, I can recommend to release officially as tarballs, 
instead of (only) as Git tagging.  I believe most distros prefer using 
tarballs.  As an example, in Debian we track new upstream releases by 
looking at the name of the tarballs - notice the "watch" column at 
http://qa.debian.org/developer.php?login=debian-olpc-devel@lists.alioth.debian.org
