Comment (by walter):

 I suppose we need to strip out all non-numerics and try to make a sensible
 conversion, e.g., if the user enters 1m for 1 meter and then 1cm for one
 centimeter, we'd need to convert to 0.01. Not easy. In the short term, if
 there are suggestions for an easier to understand error message, I am all
 ears.
