Comment(by eben):

 Is there any evidence that the current design isn't strong enough?  I
 personally don't anticipate needing anything stronger than an
 indeterminate progress indicator (which the pulsing icon serves as).

 I'm much more concerned with improving the latency between clicking on an
 activity and seeing the launcher; this should happen in 100ms or less, and
 can take up to a second or more at present.
