I did a price analysis, and a VM with comparable CPU and memory characteristics costs, per annum, at _least_ $1,000 per year, and up to $2,000 per year, for "low priority" VMs. For standard priority VMs, the price goes up to a whopping $5,098/year. Again, this is for a VM with eight cores, and 64GB RAM. Since bandwidth and power are free from MIT, buying our own server gives us way more bang for the buck, especially if we figure we'll have it for ~6-7 years.
