Mobile Health in Developing Countries. Developing a Research Agenda

While the emergent field of mobile healthcare (mHealth) has captured
the popular imagination, achieving scale and sustainability continue
to be problematic. Inherently multidisciplinary, the plethora of
approaches have failed to provide a common framework of investigation.
Further, the emphasis on case-studies, derived from an a-theoretical
perspective, has led to a paucity of rigorous generalizable research.
The emphasis on a practitioner and donor-based agenda has led to a
reliance on technology development, implementation, and evaluation,
rather than an investigation of mechanisms of adoption and effective
usage.

Addressing these systemic issues requires laying out a research agenda
focusing on advancing theory, developing rigorous scientific metrics,
investigating the psychological and social
levels of analysis, and supporting scholarship in the global South.
The theoretical framework of analysis, the ICT for healthcare
development (ICT4H) model helps move from a specific case to
understanding the context of the social environment.

BIO

Dr. Arul Chib is Assistant Director of Singapore internet Research
Center (SiRC) and Assistant Professor of Wee Kim Wee School of
Communication and Information at Nanyang Technological
University. He is an expert in the area of healthcare mobile phone
systems, who pursues actionoriented research in varied cross-cultural
contexts, particularly in resource-constrained environments. Dr. Chib
plays a key role in the identification and investigation of key
factors influencing the adoption of technology for positive health
outcomes, and in the design and development  of healthcare information
and communication technology (ICT) systems spanning online and mobile
platforms, culminating in collaborations globally with agencies such
as INPPARES (Peru), Nyaya Health (Nepal), Text to Change (Uganda),
Udaan (India), UNICEF and World Vision (Indonesia). Dr. Chib's
contribution to rural healthcare for marginalized communities has been
recognized with the granting of the 2011 Prosper.NET-Scopus Award for
the use of ICTs for sustainable development, sponsored by the United
Nations University and the German Federal Ministry of Education and
Research. In March 2012, Dr. Chib, along with co-editor Dr. Roger
Harris, released a new volume, 'Linking research to practice:
Strengthening ICT for Development Research Capacity in Asia'.
