I think the the two ring idea might work really well with students. I can show the two options to my 5th graders and see what they prefer, if that would help.<br><br>One question, in either model, what is the UI behavior. If I click on the "Resume" icon, am I presented with a browser into the Journal?<br>

The distinction of gray and color icons isn't enough to alleviate the confusion arising from having duplicate sets of icons.</div>

Here's a 3rd for the mentioned double ring of activity icons; inside non-colour icons for "Start new" behaviour, outside ring of coloured icons for "Resume" behaviour. Journal icon shown at top of ring for easy access (note that its coloured icon in the "Start now" ring is now out of place):<br>
