[Sugar-devel] GSoC Project Idea

This recommendation shares a common feature of Sugar Labs projects -
complexity.

The primary goal of any change to the Sugar Labs website should start
with making Sugar available on a wide range
of platforms, and then documenting that capability so that prospective
nontechnical users can make Sugar available in their computing environment.

The second priority is expressed in:

Lesson plans (eg, how to get a microscope working with an XO
<https://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Talk:EduJAM/2011>, 4th grade curriculum
lessons
<https://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Math4Team/Resources/Curriculum_Chart>)

So far in my experience lesson plans are of very limited value. However,
descriptions of how Sugar can be used constructively to extend a
learner's knowledge is certainly a priority in showing how to make Sugar
more valuable to its users. The books The XO Laptop in the Classroom by
Sdenka Z. Salas-Pilco, Physics with XO by Guzman Trinidad, and Make Your
Own Sugar Activities by James Simmons et al should certainly be featured.

The educational value of Sugar is greatly extended by access to a school
server (e.g. Khan Academy Lite, PhET simulations, ASLO library of Sugar
activities, Project Gutenberg books, Wikipedia) in the normal case where
internet is not available. Sugar Labs would be wise to embrace the use
of school servers. The XSCE community provides installable versions for
a wide variety of platforms.
