Yes, it was broken by Sugar Labs.

You can fix it like this;

(a) start Terminal activity and type

	olpc-12867-reproduce

and Sugar will restart, but the volume controls still won't work properly, so then;

(b) install this kernel;

which fixes several sound driver problems and renames the controls so that they have the same names as the controls on XO-1, XO-1.5 and XO-4.

The Distance activity works for me with this kernel.
