Probably the best is revert
https://github.com/sugarlabs/sugar/commit/9c37cff7c8bc7d6cfc55f53e4c55926f555713ff
or try to move the logic to jarabe/model/network.py,
but I don't know if that will solve the performance regression.

I will look at the other changes too.
