If you mean saving work from a laptop onto a USB drive, perhaps the
Sugar Backup and Restore activities may suffice.

Now, I also know you have operating system upgrades on your mind.

If you mean preserving journal across an operating system upgrade then
you may use a USB implementation of olpc-update to do the upgrade,
thus potentially avoiding having to backup and restore.
