[Sugar-devel] Recommendations?

I just created SoaS SD-cards for my two seven year old grandsons.
The original instruction on the Sugarlabs Wiki did not work for me, so put the description of what I needed to do additionally in by blog at

Nor I want to create a VM on my Mac to be able to play around myself.
There are a few options to do that, e.g. I could start with SoaS or With Trisquel.
Any recommendations what I should use in a VM?
And any recommendation what size for the different parts I should configure?
livecd-iso-to-disk allows to set overlay-size and home-size.
What are reasonable values when one does not have the 4BG restriction if an SD card?
