OK so a couple of quick thoughts:
1) The current search design does _not_ grey out mis-matches, it reduces the alpha. So we do have two metaphors; buddy grey stroke for absent; full colour/faded alpha buddy icon for search. Searching for a buddy that is absent is the weakest visual case here, where you'd be left looking at a screen of faded alpha colour icons, and a grey stroke only buddy icon. I think that would still be a reasonable case.
2) The other option discussed was to reuse the grey rounded rect for the search hits, though this would clash with our mouse over/down use.
