[Sugar-devel] TamTam i18n improvement branch

All,

The TamTam Suite of four programs has posed a challenge for
localization for some time.

There have been a variety of issues, including an incomplete migration
from it's former repo that has had strings being committed to the
wrong location and a failure of i18n changes to make their way into
the POT files on Pootle. There was a recent addition of sound sample
tooltips that were not very well internationalized (for example "Ounk"
was the tooltip shown upon hovering over a picture of a guinea pig,
that makes a sound like a guinea pig, so we have changed the string to
"guinea pig").

Perhaps challenging was the fact that the four individual programs of
the TamTam Suite had an extensively overlapping set of strings. This
resulted in an over representation of TamTam strings in the
glossary.po of the Terminology project and made it roughly 4 times the
work to locallize these strings.

A number of us have been working together on a new branch of TamTam
with substantial i18n improvements, some improved strings, added
developer's comments to make it easier to understand the meaning of
tooltip strings, and perhaps most importantly, a merger of the four
separate PO files into a single PO file that covers all 4 programs,
thereby only needing one translation of the overlapping strings.

A review of TamTam in Poolte has been performed, promoting suggestions
to "fuzzy" strings, so that they are present in the PO file
(suggestions are kept in a separate table, not in the PO file itself).
This is in preparation for rolling out the new branch and
transferring the already locaized strings into the new PO file. Keep
an eye out for this change in Poolte (coming soon hopefully) and
please review the new TamTam PO file for the new strings and proper
migration.

Thanks to Aleksey Lim (especially), as well as Gonzalo Odiard and
Rafael Ortiz for their contributions to this effort. Some of the
TamTam tickets this should help resolve are listed below:
