I don't think this will take focus, since if they don't know what it
means they won't focus on it. The empty place to type a name is
obvious, as is the button for saying we've finished typing.

I don't think they will.
People flashing the machines don't have the time available to interact
with them, nor to catch the startup screen. Having the data visible in
the naming screen reduces their effort significantly.
The original patch from Esteban lowers the cost of deployment without
unduly affecting the learner.
Since the naming screen is never seen again, I see little reason to
protect the purpose of it.
