Oh blast, thanks Sean/Walter, I'd tested in Safari and Chrome with no problems. Firefox was also working fine  but recently I reworked the svg to define all the images in the <defs> section and then using <use> to actually place them (this makes inserting removing new icons in the correct grid position much easier). I'll revert to the old technique and re-test in Firefox.

Probably time to make a quick python script to generate the xml...

O.T. I have a pretty much working process for generating the weekly mail list SOM as SVGs, with working built in pan and zoom, resolution independent and searchable text, and a smaller file size (the jpg's I upload are about 300Kb, the svgz of the same map was about 200Kb). Unfortunately it looks like browser support of svg varies enough to derail the practicality of this.
