This is an interesting thread. One thing the AbiWord team is looking
to do with this years GSoC is to develop a DOM -style interface to
AbiWidget that can reuse Javascript code. If we succeed all those
javascripters can script AbiWidget as a rich text widget.

The benefit of this is that will be fully sharable through AbiCollab,
( everyone else in the group can watch the widget change in real time)
plus AbiWidget is editable by default. This might make an AbiWidget
solution a better bet for some activities.
