IMHO, the best way to do this on the XO-1 is to change the screen
resolution using xrandr.  This requires some fiddling with xorg.conf in
advance, but I believe it should be possible with the most recent Geode X
driver.  I also think this would be a great use for the disused F5-F8 keys.

Alternatively, you could use these keys to change the screen's DPI setting
directly, without altering the resolution, so that fonts and scalable
graphics scale up (or down).
