Deploying the presence service package for a while longer is the official workaround. After all, that's why Simon and Tomeu spent the time of reimplementing it as a compatibility fallback.

I am happy to transfer the knowledge I have been gaining during the 
summit, would be great to advance on that end. I have a few more smaller 
Etoys related issues [1] I would like to pester you about and maybe 
upstream has moved on [2] by then :)
