You probably know already by now, but I'm replying to let others know:
on Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic), xz is in the xz-utils package.

I highly recommend xz over bzip2 or lzma. gzip still has the merit of
being much faster in compression and somewhat faster in decompression.
