Sure, you can have usb persistence that way, but it is not recommended.
Our images can be put in a usb drive using the graphical usb-creator
utility present in the latest Trisquel desktop (and Ubuntu) systems, or
you can also use FUSBi or Unetbootin if you are not a Trisquel user.
The way the usb system is created is different than performing a full
installation on it, and will work better and a lot faster. If you want,
you can also try our -still experimental- alternate usb creator script,
that will use ext4 instead of vfat. Both usb creation systems are
similar to the way a live CD works, and are designed for portability.
The alternate script is http://devel.trisquel.info/live-usb-sugar.sh

If you still want to fully install Trisquel on a usb drive, you can
avoid this step by selecting the disk you would like to install grub in,
using the advanced settings at the last step of the installer. Anyway,
the installed system will be prone to fail if you use in a different
computer than the one you used for the installation. The usb-creator
methods avoid this problems.
We will publish an updated RC with the graphical usb-creator app built
in: http://trisquel.info/files/screenshots/usb-creator.png
Also this way uses just 380MB of the drive, the rest is used for
persistence data, and you can reserve some of the space for normal usb
drive usage. The minimum drive size needed is 512MB.
