  For the Spring 2009 semester (starts January 20), I will be teaching a
public relations writing class at Bentley University in Waltham, MA as an
Adjunct Instructor. This is my fifth year at Bentley.

I add a "service learning" component to the course. As a final project,
teams of students will be developing public relations a PR plan and some
materials for small nonprofit organizations. I am currently seeking
nonprofits in the Waltham area.

In many ways, the students serve as consultants to the nonprofit. They're
not regular volunteers for the organization - this is not free help passing
out fliers or making phone calls.

Here are a few guidelines and qualifications for interested organizations:

1. Legal U.S. nonprofit registration/designation is a requirement (501C3 is
preferred).

2. Benefits delivered/felt on a local level is a big plus, but not an
absolute requirement. Students like to help out close to home.

3. Grass roots/small organizations are preferred. One that has already "been
discovered" by the media, received much coverage, or is already working with
an ad agency or PR firm is not a great fit.

4. No religious/faith-based or political affiliation.

5. Many students don't have their own transportation, and work part-time, so
the organization should be located near Bentley, and have an actual office.
Travel/commute time is often a major issue - anything more than 15 minutes
from campus is a turnoff, unless you're willing to come to campus to meet
with the students instead.

6. A primary contact from the organization - preferably an officer - must be
able to be part of a nonprofit panel in a late January or early February
class session as part of the selection process.

7. The contact must be available to students a few times during the
semester, and willing to participate in one class session for a formal
presentation at the end of the semester (late April/early May). The
nonprofit must also be willing to make a commitment to fast response time to
student/team e-mails (within two business days). Students often don't keep
traditional business hours. The ability to meet or communicate outside of
9-5, Monday thru Friday is a plus.

"Mission-Based Massachusetts" is an email distribution list for topics of
general interest to people who care about nonprofit, philanthropic,
community-based, grassroots, and other mission-based organizations in the
Bay State.
