Notes on Sugar on Virtual Box I am working with Laura, a teacher from Maine teacher who wants to use Sugar with her students who already have 1-1 Macbooks. Host F puts you into full screen mode. Host I toggles mouse integration Sugar works bes without mouse integration. Then you can get to the frame. Doe anyone know how too create an icon that could be put in the doc that would start up Virtual box with Sugar with minimal clicks? How can she run a pilot with just her students next year? What can she do for a Jabber server. Can it be run on the teachrers machine? Can she set up her own on random box on under her desk? Server on a Stick. Could she run the server in Virtual Box on her machine? She is going to try creating her own XS server following these instructions: <a href="http://wiki.laptop.org/go/XS_Installing_Software" target="_blank">http://wiki.laptop.org/go/XS_Installing_Software</a> Here are some of the activities she uses in Math and Science teaching in Middle school. <ul><li>geogebra - has applets that people have created that show students concepts then student can make their own.</li><li> University of Maine has an Open Sim for the kids in Maine. She feels the avatar free's the kids and allows them to practice social problem solving. She finds doing that with avatars works better then the simulations she had been doing. We probalby don't want to do something as heavy as Second Life, but we might think about something with Avatars that lets kids simulate social situations.</li> <li>Interesting teaching method in Second Life. Students were asked to move to diffrent colored areas as they progres sthrough the lesson so its easy to see ho the class is doing.</li><li>Second life has also given her an ability to observe other teachres that she doesn't have in real life as she is in a 5 teacher school.</li> </ul> Laura also thinks it would be valuable as summer school. Her district doesn't pay for summer school but she could have her kids do stuff and even meet together online.
