Samson, e-mail is unreliable, in general. There's no technical
assurance of reliability in the design. When the person sending the
mail does not receive any reply, they should try again, or try other
means of communicating. It isn't possible to discriminate between
being ignored or the mail being dropped by spam filtering.
As a consequence of this event, where an applicant for membership has
had no response for nine months, it would be best for the committee
and systems@ mailing list to change the procedure to add some
reliability.
I suggest these technical changes;
1. instead of using an e-mail alias in sunjammer:/etc/aliases, add a
private mailing list, and subscribe the membership committee to the
mailing list. As a result, the private archives of the mailing list
will be available to the current any future membership committee to
check against.
2. in addition to supporting e-mail, also add a web form which sends
a mail to the same address.
3. in the procedure for applying for membership, encourage applicants
to also CC the iaep@ mailing list, and change the membership committee
practices to allow processing requests that are seen on that mailing
list.
