About CodeWorld: open source programming and math education
CodeWorld <http://www.codeworld.info/> is a program to introduce children
to computer programming. It is based on open source programming tools and
languages. Middle school students create their own pictures, animations,
and ultimately design and implement their own video games, using basic
algebra and geometry along the way.

The program combines an interactive web-based development environment with
an easy to use graphics library. The program makes it easy to build new
creative content in the very first hour. CodeWorld has been taught as a
trial class for the past school year. The presentation will cover
experiences with the open source tools and the class itself.
Chris Smith[image: ChrisSmith.jpg]Chris Smith is the Director of Learning
Technology at Brindle Waye, Ltd. He has been programming for fun since 1984
(age 5), and professionally since 1997. He is passionate about both
programming languages and open source software. Chris maintains and
contributes to numerous projects, including the Snap web application
framework. Chris developed the CodeWorld program and its the web-based
programming environment, and taught it during the 2011-2012 school year.
