1. Steppe by Steppe / Side by Side - Kazakhstan, Australia

Requests 10 XOs over 12 months

   Project Objectives:
...Our aim is that by providing access to [OLPC] resources in remote
villages, will allow the students to expand their educational
prospects without having to leave their village, traditional
lifestyle, village traditions and customs, or family, for the city –
something which the community often finds very damaging in this
   rapidly changing and globalised world.

Throughout our project, we have visited many schools in very remote
rural areas, these schools are often very under resourced – lacking
sporting equipment, proper toilets, libraries and many other
facilities that we ourselves take for granted today. Adequate phone
lines/reception is often non-existent in these areas also – let alone
the internet. Most people in these remote villages have never even
seen a computer, let alone used the internet.

In these rural areas (where hardly anyone has seen a computer), there
are very limited prospects for further education. We hope that by
providing a few laptops, internet access (along basic training) and
software, to a school, we can increase their chances of continued
higher education. Access to global information will greatly enhance
their awareness, understanding, and knowledge of the larger community
that we are all apart of, resulting in greater empowerment at both a
communal and personal level, thus greatly increasing their
   developmental prospects.

Our other goal is to partner each participating school in Kazakhstan
to a sister school in Australia, it will allow students in these
distant regions of the world to learn and grow together with open
minds. This can only be done however once these schools have access to
the internet (and thus telephone lines, electricity, and computers).
The partnered schools will then be able to keep in regular contact
with each other, learning about each others traditions, lifestyle, and
   culture...

[SPECIFIC SITE NEEDS TO BE POSTED OFF
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Projects ]

   Requests 0 XOs

   Project Objectives:
The purpose of the project is to support the development of a
creative and compassionate young people to fight and win the war of poverty.

   (1) To allow children (6-12) in developing countries to freely
express themselves in the form of creative writing. The website provides
a space for creative expressions to be shared by anyone anywhere. No
cost for posting. All submission will be copyright free.

   (2) To allow children in developed countries to listen to what
children with other cultures have to say. Readers from outside the
developing world can download the ebook to their
ipad/ipod/iphone/laptop/desktop etc. The books will be sold for $0.99
per download. Once downloaded, it is free to distribute to friends,
classmates and families.

   (3) All proceeds, after expenses, will be directed to OLPC project to
send more laptops to children in LDC. No money will be forwarded to the
children to avoid abuse.

Note: The creative writing of a 6-12 years old will not be a "full
book" as what we usually understood. It will be something like a bedtime
reading to your kids with stories and pictures. When editing, a web link
can be added to show more contents. Therefore, keep in mind that ebook
here refers to creative writing from a 6-12 years old.

   Measurement of objectives:

   (1) Against objective #1, the number of creations posted in the
website. The source and diversity of the creation will also be a good
indicator of depth of the project.

   (2) Against objective #2, the number of downloads is primary
indicator. Since there is no copyright and transfer restrictions, the
download figure will be an underestimate of true circulation.

   (3) Against objective #3, the amount of contributions from the
project to OLPC will be used.

reliant on overseas help, especially when teachers do not speak English
and are unable to seek live assistance online in their native language
