Caroline/Bert,
Do you still have access to those machines? If X server is the problem, the
errors logged in /var/log/Xorg.0.log or $HOME/.xsession-errors will be
valuable for diagnosis.
If this log is not preserved on the stick, then one has to be boot the system
'single' user mode? The bootloader will usually have a way to append this boot
parameter. Once the single user console comes up:
# startx
will launch the X server and report any errors on the console and also log
them into /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.
If the graphical login manager is configured to log into a default login
account, then post-login errors will be logged in $HOME/.xsession-errors.
These two files can give us a clue.
