What about SoaS2 CDs? Do they work (except for loosing all the work on 
reboot, of course)?
Might not be too great, but certainly better than non-working boot 
helpers.

I've found a page [1] containing instructions on building boot helpers 
for various other distros. Maybe it's a starting point.
