That's the goal of a DDD - except the word "custom":  The goal is to be 
able to use an official Debian DVD to install a Linux system optimized 
for use with Sugar.

Me too - I have been wondering alot about that.

Jani proposed that we (Debian) base our efforts on his initial work.  I 
explained him why I chose to start over from scratch (basically I wanted 
to use what I believe to be a better coding style) and proposed we work 
together from our foundation at Alioth.  Jani acknowledged some of my 
reasons to start over, but have not yet commented on my proposal.

We are currently 11 members of the OLPC team at Alioth.  I am looking 
forward to more people joining that group, and to more people than me 
actually doing some packaging - for Debian and any Debian-based distros.
