Not fully automated, but I strive to hide the complex parts behind a 
middle layer (that's the "cdbs" part of above referenced posting).

Proper packaging is more than shrink-wrapping.  It is also making sure 
that the package works well together with the surrounding packages of a 
distribution.  So even if some xo2deb script is written (which shouldn't 
be that difficult, actually), one would still want to polish the result, 
based on deeper knowledge of the distribution packaged for.

I suggest we avoid going into technical details specific to Debian here.
