My gut feeling is the same as Aleksey. A notification is likely too nagging, adding to the power management CP text seems like a good alternative.

The only design problem I see with this is that the
problem itself is caused because the users don't go to the power
management CP when they want to use the 3G device in the first place, so putting a warning there will be helpless in most of the cases, except if they get there by mistake during the process.

But, even if we show this warning at the at modem configuration CP section there can be common situations where the user will miss the message.

Another possible option to consider in addition to extra power CP text would be to have a count down in seconds for idle disconnect in the 3G device palette, that way it's easily spotted by the user if automatic power management is enabled by default and the user has not explored the CP.

I like this idea better, but still, after then user starts using the 3G device they barely check the palette (the palette is mostly a hidden resource) and it does not make sense for us to wait that they will check it time to time just to see if there is something we want to let them know, it will probably be too late.

I don't like the idea of spamming with notifications either, but this is one of these situations where the system should effectively communicate to the user about a odd behaviour,

When were you proposing the warning notification? Every time you start a 3G connection with power management enabled?

That is what the current patch does, the expectation is that the users will notice the message as soon as possible to avoid getting the connection dropped.

What I like of this approach is that the message is displayed just a few seconds after the user has clicked on the connect button, which means it is highly probable that he is still paying attention to the screen to get to message in time.

Every time the 3G connection is about to auto close?

Not a bad idea, but why waiting until the last minute?

It might be a silly example, but that reminds me of a online game I used to play where players were kicked out of the server after some minutes of being inactive (receiving an warning message one minute before they got kicked). The problem was that the players were inactive (in most cases) because they were not using the client, so they couldn't see the warning message in time anyway.

After the 3G connection has auto closed? Just one notification the first time this behaviour happens?

I think all the possibilities are valid (in the long term), regardless of when they receive the message, so I rather take the one I consider the most effective in terms of time and user experience, since I consider that getting disconnected unexpectedly is far more annoying that receiving a message notification.

@Gary: have you tested the last dextrose build to see how the notification works? :)
