For the past couple of months many of us have gotten the chance to work with
several different organization in the Sugar ecosystem, some of them upstream
and some of them downstream.
There are 4 reoccurring traits among successful open source organizations
and individuals: trustworthy, trust, empower, and align.
Trustworthy -- Successful organization tend to be trustworthy. They earn the
trust of others. They are stable and predictable. They act with personal and
professional regard for other organizations in the ecosystem.
Trust -- Successful open source organizations tend to trust others. They
expect that other people and organizations usually act in a trustworthy
manner. They expect that other in the ecosystem with act with personal and
professional regard for each other.
Empower -- Successful open source organization tend to empower others. When
a feeling of mutual trust has been established it becomes easy to empower
others both inside and outside your organization to make good decision which
are in the best interest of themselves and others.
Align -- Finally successful open source organizations tend to focus on
finding and aligning with other similar organizations.
These characteristics are not about being weak or naïve. The foundation,
trustworthiness, is something that we must earn. Trust is something others
must earn from us.
