 Thanks for the report, but I don't think this is a problem.  It is easy to
 turn the brightness back one step.  The entirely dark display does have a
 use-case; audio listening and power saving.  The other indicators on most
 commodity machines show if the system is still active; power, wireless and
 disk LEDs.

 My opinion is that GNOME has removed a useful feature, but I don't use
 GNOME.  The Ubuntu Unity desktop does dim all the way to black.
