Comment(by manuq):

 there is also the new_from_string constructor for the GConf.Value but
 couldn't get a list from it.  For value type STRING works like this:

 {{{
 v = GConf.Value.new_from_string(GConf.ValueType.STRING, 'hola')
 }}}
