 Personally, I think it sounds like an overkill for current Chat design.

 There is no roster list (to see what people you need to address your
 message), you cannot type "someone: message" to alert "someone", etc.

 Implementing all these features will mean creating one more IM client. The
 more appropriate way might be looking how to make existing software useful
 in Sugar (and keep chat as an example of simple IM for Sugar to let
 newbies experiment with its sources).
