 See also #1727. The current mechanism (keeping an internal counter based
 on a 1-second timer running all the time) should be replaced by something
 that records the starting time (acquiring it from NM since the connection
 might have been connected before Sugar was up) and shows the difference
 between current time and start time. A timer should only be used while the
 palette is up.

 #1652 has the original discussion for this feature.
