Comment:

 Does the server have write permissions to the folder it is running in
 (especially shared_files)?

 Try checking out the newest version of the [http://gitorious.org/jlew/xo-
 file-distro/blobs/master/FileShare.server/server.py server] (added in more
 descriptive error handlers to help diagnose this problem).
