Comment:

 This has a full diagnosis at http://dev.laptop.org/ticket/10694 and has
 been tracked down to a kernel bug, fixed in more recent kernels. As this
 is unrelated to SugarLabs I'll close this ticket and we can use the OLPC
 one for tracking inclusion into OLPC builds.
