Comment:

 alsa-plugins-pulseaudio was the offending package. Removing it brings
 everything to normal and flash still works. It was part of the adobe flash
 installation instructions ( http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Flash )
 I guess is not always wise to follow the instructions :-)
