 I created another, identical Live USB with the maximum overlay (3.2Gb).
 This time Journal works and saves fine (but Sugar reports it to be only
 about 400Mb in size).

 Considering that I can't replicate the problem, and the original log files
 are gone, I think this ticket can be closed.
