Comment:

 HAL was just uninstalled again on my XO-1 because nothing except Sugar
 depends on it anymore. Everyone else is moving away from it; we should
 swim with the stream to avoid maintenance overhead. ;)
 devicekit-disks is used by Gnome, so it looks like the way to go.
